May 4, 1970 (Ohio- after Howard Ruffner), 2012, Ink on Duralar, 37 x 54 inches

Howard Ruffner was a student at Kent State University when the governor of Ohio sent in the National Guard to subdue protesting students. He gave me permission to make this drawing of KSU students from his photograph taken minutes before the guardsman started firing live ammunition into the crowd of unarmed students, killing four and injuring nine. You can see more of Howard’s images from that day and read/hear his story here.
