In 1960, the Irvine Ranch Company sold 1000 acres of land to the University of California to build a new campus to accommodate increasing enrollment (UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz were also established during this period.) President Lyndon Johnson came to Irvine to give the principal speech at the UCI Dedication ceremony.
